I’ve always been obsessed with the New York Subway system. As a child, in Queens, whenever my parents took me on the 7 train into Manhattan the highlight of the trip, for me, was not the gleaming skyscrapers or dynamic street life, it was the mysterious and shadowy world of the subway. The dark and decaying stations and their foreboding tunnels, the syncopated clack of subway cars, the charm of elevated platforms and the riders that use them - these were moments of sheer poetry to me. No mystery then, that it’s my happy space as a photographer!
